Right, so I'm generally more of an action figures, comic books, video games, Linux computing, philosophy, and law geek... with a dash of other academia thrown in for good measure. But man, these photos of the large hadron collider have me totally geeking out. It reminds me of the time I toured the Grand Coulee Dam--it's like walking into an engineer's version of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.
And best of all, it exists solely for scientific research.
Sometimes it's just awesome to be a human. When we aren't fighting, we build the coolest stuff.

"When we're not fighting, eh?"
Heh. Insert argument of choice vis a vis war and technological advancement here. ^_^
Well...
...there are definitely a few of those. As a general rule, war is a great motivator, but something that motivates big research spending should not be mistaken for the only possible motivation. The Germans made advancements in medical technology by torturing and killing innocent people, but they still lost the nuke race--not coincidentally, to one of the least war-torn countries in the world at that time.
Furthermore, the kind of technology that comes out of wartime research is generally focused on two things: killing people and keeping them alive. Both of which have their place, and indeed, many technological advancements that have nothing to do with killing people nonetheless come to facilitate that process; but massive projects of the kind depicted here are simply too expensive and too theoretical for anything but a peacetime economy to undertake. This project will not give us better missiles or less terrorism. A deeper understanding of physics may actually extend human lifespans or alleviate poverty in the long run, but short-term all this does is further enrich the education of the most educated .01% of the people in the world.
An interesting intersection is actually the space race as spurred on by the Cold War; in that case, we had some very "non-military" technology getting pushed for a nationalist agenda, and the money we poured into R&D in the 1950's is still bearing fruit today (as virtually every new commercial technology of the new millennium is based on the 20th century's most important discovery--the transistor). In that case, we had the peace necessary for uninterrupted scientific discovery coupled with the competition that seems to drive American ingenuity.
But again, one possible motivation should never be mistaken for the only (or best) kind. U.S. military technology is still the best in the world, but increasingly "military technology" is the only kind of technology that fits in that sentence. So whatever argument you choose, while recognizing that war has motivated a great many technological advancements, I maintain that technology will advance more quickly in more important (i.e. non-lethal) ways when war is avoided.
War and Technology
I'm hard-pressed to think of a major technological advancement of the 20th century that didn't have its roots in human conflict, lethal or not. It's not the only motivator, but it's a truly effective one. Another thing I'm hard-pressed to think of is a military technology that hasn't spawned peacetime advancements. I certainly don't take any umbrage at the notion that we don't need war to advance, but I feel it is somewhat disingeneous to make the comment, "When we aren't fighting, we build the coolest stuff." We build the coolest stuff rather independently of how much fighting we're doing.
(FYI, that anon comment is me. Sorry. ^_^)
Fair Enough
And hey, guns and swords and big explosions are undeniably cool. Even so, I'll stand by the fundamentally qualitative assertion that stuff is even cooler when it is not specifically invented to harm others. d^_^b
Non-conflict related advancements in the 20th century
I haven't exactly checked out ALL of the roots of this advancement, but it has definitely given much to the advancement of mandkind. The discovery of genetic manipulation of any sort, whether chemical, biological or other means. Let me know if you think of other forms of advancement that doesn't involve conflict. I am wholly interested in acquiring a list.
On a completely unrelated note
Don't you find it amusing that the two things you're Anxiously Anticipating are set to come out on your siblings birthdays? :)
YA BUT !
Check out what might happen when this thing comes online!!

And today...
It seems to have gone online today. And the particle beam they shot through it as a test? Made it all the way through! Amazing!
